Take a Look at Stained Glass: From Colourful Window Panes to the Pursuit of Happiness

When most people think of "glass", the first features that come to mind are probably transparency, reflection or strength. But there is another feature that must be mentioned, which is "colour". If you've visited the churches or admired old European architecture, you've probably seen "multicolored glasses" that adorn windows, doors, or clerestory in the form of abstract shapes, flowers or portraits. Those works are all made from “Stained Glass” whose history goes back a thousand years.

From Glass Panels to Works of Art Stained Glass is coloured glass made by adding metallic oxides such as oxides of gold, copper, cobalt, etc., during the melting process while the glass is still in its molten state, then rolled into sheets and left to cool down. It is commonly used as an art work to decorate buildings such as windows and doors, and sometimes to decorate small pieces of furniture such as lamps and jewellery boxes or even plant pots.

The traditional stained glass making process begins with the design of the pattern, size and colour. Next, large sheets of stained glass are cut with a glass cutting tool into smaller pieces of various sizes as designed. Each piece will be painted with colours or added shading before being fired in the furnace to fix the colouring effects. After that, each piece of stained glass will be assembled on the model and then welded together with lead strips or metal rails to form a beautiful frame. The final finishing process is taking care of the small details by cleaning and polishing.
